STAMFORD, NY, August 1, 2025 — Americans deserve the lowest prices in the world on all medicines. And, since Americans already pay the lowest prices in the world for generic drugs it defies common sense and fairness that Americans, and American hospitals, are paying up to 5x more for branded drugs.
President Trump is right to call out and demand an end to this big pharma gravy train. This is especially important since branded drugs are 85% of total U.S. spending on all pharmaceuticals. Getting branded drug prices right for America is a first step in a critical process that the Trump Administration is leading.
Though generic drugs make up the smaller portion of our spending, they represent 90% of all prescriptions filled in the U.S. What’s more, the country depends on China and India for the active ingredients and fill-finishing of more than 80% of our generic drug supply. Our dependence on foreign sources for the vast majority of our drug supply is a national security nightmare. This is the reason the Trump Administration has prioritized reshoring our generic pharmaceutical manufacturing.
President Trump is also correct in saying that Americans should have the right to buy prescription drugs directly from the manufacturers without having to pay unnecessary and often extraordinary markups for wholesalers and Pharmacy Benefit Managers. These middlemen represent the pre-digital consumer-led economy and add little value for the drugs that Americans buy and use on a regular and continuing basis. Many countries in the world do exactly this and their citizens benefit to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars in savings. We at Apiject thank President Trump for his leadership and look forward to working with him to accomplish his goals.
