Chapter 5: Suitable Drug Products for BFS

Blow-Fill-Seal has been used to fill and finish sterile liquid pharmaceuticals for more than 50 years.

BFS has successfully filled a wide range of pharmaceuticals, and advances in its technology have allowed this range to widen in recent years.

In today’s market, BFS is most widely used to fill and finish ophthalmics and nebulizer medicines. But it is also used in primary packaging of simple solutions, small molecules, infusions, emulsions and suspensions, biologics, and vaccines across oral, parenteral, ophthalmic, and nasal applications.

And while not currently in market, BFS has been used to successfully fill nasal and parenteral vaccines which are continuing through development.

BFS can also be used in the freeze chain, with successful filling and subsequent freezing down to negative 80 degrees Celsius without adverse effects on the polymer container.

In recent times, R&D into BFS has allowed for more filling of temperature sensitive products, such as proteins and novel vaccines.

If your company is considering a drug product for BFS, ApiJect recommends you undertake a simple study to ensure compatibility and stability of your product with a pharmaceutical-grade resin container.

Our team is happy to help you with this process.
